The scientific activity of the Department of Pharmacology throughout its history has been very multidirected. In the chronological aspect, the following directions of research and development of new drugs can be highlighted:
1924-1970 – cardiotonic, hypotensive;
1971-1990 – anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, choleretic, hepatoprotective, anticonvulsant;
1991-1999 – anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, hepatoprotective, tocolytic, cardioprotective, anti-atherosclerotic;
2000-2004 – anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, hepatoprotective, tocolytic, cardioprotective, cardiotonic, antiatherosclerotic, antiulcer, vulvoprotective, prostatoprotective, reparative, stress-protective, antidiabetic;
2005-2010 antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, reparative, wound healing, tocolytic, antiulcer, prostatoprotective, gravidoprotective, fetoprotective, cardioprotective, vulvoprotective, anxiolytic, antiamnestic, immunotropic, angioprotective, hypouricemic, antialcoholic, cerebroprotective, frigoprotective, chondroprotective, hypolipidemic, antioxidant, anticonvulsant;
Since 2011 – anti-inflammatory, reparative, wound-healing, antiulcer, hypouricemic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, chondroprotective, anticonvulsant, gravidoprotective, prostatoprotective, psychotropic (sedative, anxiolytic, nootropic, stress-protective, anticonvulsant action), frigoprotective, immunotropic, cerebroprotective, antidiabetics; drugs affecting the water-salt metabolism. The influence of the dietary salt composition on the efficacy of drugs of different groups is also studied.
Recently, studies on the chronopharmacology of anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, hepatoprotective agents have been carried out.
Thus, the staff of the Department of Pharmacology preserves for the last 90 years the best traditions laid down by its founder, Academician A.I. Cherkes, and successfully develops them, working for the benefit of pharmacy and medicine.
During the last year, the results of the research conducted by the staff of the department enabled publishing of 59 articles (21 articles in publications indexed in international databases, including foreign ones, 8 articles in other foreign professional journals, 30 articles in Ukrainian professional journals), 84 thesis in the domestic conference materials and 15 – in foreign ones.
The members of the department took part in 44 scientific and practical events of various levels. During the last year, 5 patents of Ukraine were received. 3 official newsletters of Ukrmedpatentinform were published. The number of scientific publications in NUPh electronic archive is 633.
Postgraduate training is carried out (during the last year 3 dissertations were defended and diplomas received, 2 dissertations were submitted to the Specialized Scientific Council, two postgraduate students continue their studies) and two doctoral students, as well as one applicant of the doctoral degree, are working. 19 students are members of the student scientific society actively participating in scientific activities.
The department continues cooperation with the University of Ain Shams (Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt), the pharmaceutical faculty of Ben-Gurion University (Beer-Sheva, Israel).
Currently, the department has 5 doctors and 13 candidates in medical, pharmaceutical, and biological sciences. 100% of teachers have a scientific degree. Actively functioning scientific student society, graduate school, and doctoral studies. Employees of the department and under their leadership defended about 20 doctoral and more than 50 Ph.D. theses; 12 theses are performed by citizens of Ukraine from other states.

Currently, the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy employs 8 doctors and 18 candidates of medical, pharmaceutical and biological sciences. 100% of teachers have a degree. Scientific student society, postgraduate and doctoral studies are actively functioning. About 20 doctoral and more than 50 candidate dissertations have been defended by the staff of the department and under their guidance or for consulting, dissertation research by citizens of Ukraine and other countries is underway.

During the 2020-2021 academic year Employees of the department on the basis of scientific research published 63 articles, including 24 articles in scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science, 28 articles in domestic professional publications, 11 articles in other periodicals, incl. foreign.

110 abstracts were published in conference proceedings of various levels.

The total h-index  staff of the department (Scopus): 29.
The total number of documents to be indexed (Scopus): 150.
The total number of citations (Scopus): 121.
Employees of the department took part in scientific and practical events of different levels, 44 speeches were made.
During the last academic year, 15 patents of Ukraine were received.
The number of scientific publications in the electronic archive of NUPh – 1181.
Scientific personnel are being trained: during the last academic year 2 doctoral dissertations and 3 candidate dissertations were defended, 5 postgraduate students are being trained.

The Student Scientific Society of the department includes 26 students who take an active part in scientific activities.
